REVOXER PROJECT HOME
Welcome to the preliminary home page for the ReVoxer text-to-audio recorder project development page.
NEW: SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS SPECIFICATION
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
ReVoxer is a software tool designed for recording human-read audio from
text. The tool includes the functionality of audio software such as
Audacity, with features tailored for text-to-audio recordings, including:
* Text-scrolling which feeds text to the screen as the reader reads.
* Text-audio synchronization allowing for text-string searches of audio.
The ReVoxer development project is seeking coders interested in joining this project.
ReVoxer is an offshoot of the LibriVox project, and will be free software licensed under GPL. Project conception and lead developer: Umut Topkara.
BACKGROUND
LibriVox.org was launched in August 2005, with the objective of making free human-read audio recordings of public domain books, available on the internet. LibriVox is a public domain, volunteer project.
ReVoxer was conceived of as a tool to help LibriVox readers read texts; but wider applications (particularly text-string searchability of audio; and audio-accompanied text reading for language learners) became apparent.
CORE FUNCTIONALITY
* Automatic scrolling of text as you record
* Timestamping of audio to text-segments at recording time.
* Automatic scrolling of text as you listen to audio
* Text-string seachability of recorded audio
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONALITY
* Noise cancelling (so that you don't have to invest in expensive mics)
* Help for intonation of the text (e.g. high pitch words displayed in bold)
* Automatic evaluation of intonation as audio is recorded
* Manual evaluation of the intonation as audio is listened to (i.e. as feedback to the recorder; or to be incorporated into automatic evaluation of recordings)
* Ability to run the software on mobile phones and pdas
* Ability to run from the web (e.g. from librivox.org)
POTENTIAL USES OF ReVoxer
*To assist in recording text-to-audio
*To assist in reading/language learning – pairing text with audio
*As an aid to dyslexic, or learning-disabled
*To enable text-string searches of audio generated from texts, including audio books
Here's a small crude demo of how it feels to couple book text and and audio.
HISTORY
The initial discussions of the design issues started in the LibriVox forums with proposal for an alternative recording method. ReVoxer followed in discussions between Umut Topkara and LibriVox volunteers and admin.
STATUS
The ReVoxer development project is looking for volunteers to develop an advanced audio recorder tailored to speech recording. The software will be licenced under GPL. See ReVoxer at sourceforge project site.
Please contact Umut Topkara or join LibriVox forums if you would like to join this project.
